Extreme sports: Mont du Lac to host Ice Cross World Championship

Mont du Lac Resort in Superior will host the All Terrain Skate Cross Federation 500 on Saturday as part of the Red Bull Ice Cross World Championship series.

The event is free to spectators who can view the action from the base lodge area.

Men, junior and women’s practice and trial runs took place Friday morning. Riders open training starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the main event set for 1 p.m.

Ice Cross features competitors skating downhill on a walled track with sharp turns, jumps and drops.

Mont du Lac has hosted the Red Bull Ice Cross World Championship, formerly Red Bull Crashed Ice, since 2013. The series features 12 races this season, but Mont du Lac is the only stop in the U.S. NBC Sports Network will air highlights Monday and Red Bull TV on Jan. 27.

Snowfall was expected overnight Friday but Mont du Lac’s ski and tubing operation is hoping to conduct normal hours Saturday.
