The 20 Least-Offensive Looks From the 2019 MTV VMAs Red Carpet

2019 MTV Video Music Awards - Red Carpet

The VMAs have always had a rebellious streak. It's been that way since they debuted 35 years ago in 1985—with hosts Bette Midler and Dan Aykroyd; no joke—and it's still true to this day. And when the awards-show rules are out the window, that means the red carpet is its own fashion free-for-all. Sometimes, that means some pretty awful style. But sometimes, it's pretty damn cool.

And tonight, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, there was a healthy mix of good and bad. For every genuinely fun camp-collar shirt, there was a sad blazer-and-jeans combo from a dude who desperately looked like he was trying to project "fun." And for every impressive suit, there was another that took things entirely too far. Hey, that's the VMAs. They are what they are; love 'em or leave 'em.

Regardless, we took the time to sift through the evening's style and bring you the best of the bunch. Some of it's a little out there. Some of it is entirely great, if we're being honest. And some of it falls in the middle ground: weird, but not too weird. Trying hard, but not necessarily "try-hard." So whether we think they're worthy of their own awards or just better than some of the other stuff we left on the cutting room floor, here are our favorite looks of the evening.
