They say Hollywood is a boy’s club — and when you look at the list of the richest Hollywood movie moguls, there’s little doubt that’s true. Everyone on the list is a male film producer or director, and collectively they control more than $20 billion in personal wealth, according to data released Wednesday by ultra-high-net-worth intelligence firm Wealth-X.
Here are the 10 richest movie moguls in Hollywood:
1. George Lucas
George Lucas, the man behind the two best-known film franchises in history, “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones,” lands the No. 1 spot on this Hollywood movie-mogul rich list. He is worth an estimated $5.4 billion, “mostly derived from revenue from the ‘Star Wars’ franchise and the sale of LucasFilm to Disney DIS, +0.35% for $4 billion in 2012,” Wealth-X says.
2. Arnon Milchan
With a plethora of hit films under his belt, including “12 Years a Slave,” “Pretty Woman,” “L.A Confidential” and “Fight Club,” Arnon Milchan, owner of New Regency Productions, is worth an estimated $5.2 billion.
3. Steven Spielberg
Steven Spielberg has directed more than 30 feature films, including classics like “ET,” “Jaws” and “Jurassic Park.” His hard work has paid off to the tune of $3.3 billion.
4. Austin Hearst
Born into the prominent Hearst media family — which owns newspapers, TV stations and other media outlets — Austin Hearst certainly had entertainment in his blood. He turned some of his energy to films — his latest being “The Vow,” starring Rachel McAdams — and is worth an estimated $1.9 billion.
5. Ryan Kavanaugh
Ryan Kavanaugh is the founder and CEO of film and TV studio Relativity, which has developed, produced, funded and distributed hundreds of films, including “The Social Network” and “Little Fockers.” He is worth an estimated $1 billion.
6. Jeffrey Katzenberg
The CEO of Dreamworks Animation US:DWA Jeffrey Katzenberg, is famous for animated hits like “The Lion King” and “Shrek.” He is also known for his wealth: he is worth an estimated $910 million.
7. Thomas Tull
Thomas Tull, CEO of film studio Legendary Pictures, is in fact a legend among many filmgoers, thanks to hits like “The Hangover” and “300.” He is worth an estimated $870 million.
8. Jerry Bruckheimer
When it comes to action, crime and drama films, Jerry Bruckheimer — whose best-known films include “Top Gun,” “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Beverly Hills Cop” — is your man, and is paid handsomely for that: he’s worth an estimated $850 million.
9. Steve Tisch
If life is like a box of chocolates, Steve Tisch, perhaps best known for his work on the film “Forrest Gump” (and as the co-owner, with his family, of the New York Giants), clearly has picked the best flavor. He’s now worth an estimated $720 million.
10. James Cameron
Academy-Award-winning screenwriter and director James Cameron has a number of massive film hits to his name, including “Titanic,” “Avatar,” “The Terminator” and “Aliens.” He is now worth an estimated $670 million.
